A color for each moment of life in Chromos’ palette
Domenico Cartago’s new album out now
After his debut, the Italian pianist’s latest work shows a wider range of sounds
And he’s back to Auand Records Piano Series as a leader of a trio
featuring Giorgio Vendola (double bass) and Pippo D’Ambrosio (drums)
also joined by special guest Elisabetta Pasquale (vocals)
Melodic ideas that linger after years and years, repetitive rhythmic bits that get thicker, layer after layer: Domenico Cartago’s music on his new album (out now on Auand Records Piano Series) is one that has taken its time.
After his debut album Skylark, mostly focused on standards, the Italian pianist pens an entire tracklist of originals (7 in the CD, plus 2 bonus tracks included in the digital release), partly composed before his 2015 album. Inside his pieces, the music he listened to in relevant moments of his life comes to light. «When I started working to the new album – Cartago says – I thought about producing music that could accompany the passage of time: a kind of lifelong soundtrack showing colors and shades of life itself. Here, the idea of Chromos was born.»
Rock and electronica soak into his jazz, always creating tension as if the music is about to mutate anytime. The plastic sound material relies on Giorgio Vendola (double bass) and Pippo D’Ambrosio (drums), who ensure a solid rhythm section, allowing the piano to swell on the dynamics and letting the melodic bits explode and evolve. The lineup also hosts a special guest on vocals: Elisabetta Pasquale stars in “Gamma”, which she wrote. «She has my highest esteem, both professionally and humanly – he explains – Having worked for several years in her project Orelle, I know her skills on writing and conceiving music, and I’m sure she’ll be well-known soon».
If it’s easy to spot traces of iconic bands such as Massive Attack, Radiohead and Skunk Anansie in the layers of Chromos, the idea behind the whole project is based on colors, meant as a metaphor of life phases, while the development of each tune highlights melodic and harmonic lines at the very core of this work.
